Kevin Feige has finally confirmed the status of Marvel’s long-in-development project based on Nova, teasing what format it will take and when it will air. Marvel Studios is in the middle of Phase 5, the second chapter in the Multiverse Saga. Despite having multiple films and television shows in development and introducing a whole host of new heroes, there is still always more on the horizon. One that fans have been waiting for is Nova, and Kevin Feige has finally clarified some information about the long-rumored project.
Speaking with Comic Book, Feige revealed that Nova is officially in development at Marvel Studios as a Disney+ series. The series will focus on Richard Ryder, the first Nova in the comics. Fans should temper their expectations, though, as Feige said the series isn’t happening soon; in fact, as Feige said:
It’s three or four years out.
Nova’s Road in the MCU
The first hint at Nova in the Marvel Cinematic Universe came in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy as the Nova Corp was featured heavily in the film. John C. Reilly’s character, Rhomann Dey, is a major part of the backstory for Richard Rider, the most well-known person to hold the mantle of Nova. The destruction of the Nova Corp planet Xandar was referenced in Avengers: Infinity War. It seemed like Marvel Studios was going to try to use Avengers: Infinity War as the jumping-off point for Richard Rider’s origin in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but it has been six years since that film, and by the time the Nova series arrives on Disney+ it will have been nearly ten years from Avengers: Infinity War.
The first update on any Nova project came in 2022 when Moon Knight writer Sabir Pirzada was hired to write a script with what many assumed at the time was a Disney+ special. Earlier this year, Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios Head of TV, Streaming, and Animation, confirmed that Nova was in development as a series. With the confirmation that Nova is about three to four years away, it puts its projected release date between 2027 and 2028. That means if it arrives after Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027, it would not be part of the Multiverse Saga but instead part of whatever Marvel Studios has planned. Marvel might plan for Nova to be one of their big new character introductions for the start of Phase 7, similar to how Shang-Chi and Eternals were two of the first projects in Phase 4.

Kevin Feige Says Not to Expect All Phase 4 MCU Heroes to Appear in Avengers 5
While Avengers 5 will be a massive MCU spectacle, Kevin Feige is telling fans that not every hero will appear in the upcoming film.
While some fans might be disappointed at the idea that Nova is so far away, this is a good thing, as Marvel has started to slow down the volume of television series to focus more on quality than quantity, so hopefully, more series like Secret Invasion won’t happen. Marvel’s television schedule is already pretty full, so there isn’t much room for a Nova series. 2024 will feature Agatha All Along, while 2025 is expected to feature both Daredevil: Born Again and Ironheart and possibly X-Men ’97 Season 2 or What If…? Season 3. There is also a live-action Wonder Man show, the Vision-led series Vision Quest, and animated series like Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,Eyes of Wakanda, and Marvel Zombies. There certainly is no shortage of Marvel television series projects at the moment, so there is still plenty of room for Nova in the future.
Marvel Studios will make an appearance at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, where more on Nova could be revealed.
